Hair Shaft Abnormalities

If a patient complains of hair breakage rather than the hair falling out at the roots, one may be dealing with a shaft problem. Microscopic examination of the actual shafts (hair mount) may be necessary to make the diagnosis. The most common cause of hair shaft abnormality or hair fragility is trichorrhexis nodosa, with node-like swellings through which the shaft readily fractures. This usually appears as a result of trauma.
