The Need for On-Going Research
The search for adequate hair loss treatment continues. In an informal survey conducted
at the 56th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologists were asked
for the most unusual treatments their patients had tried to treat their falling hair. These included massaging the scalp with hot chili peppers, pulling hair up from the scalp with suction cups,
and rubbing whale wax on the scalp!
- In a North American hair loss industry estimated at $7 billion a year, the number of dubious treatment options and miracle solutions continues to increase at the expense of the public
- Continuous hair research is required to better understand hair physiology
and find a solution to hair loss
- Only a few advances in the treatment of hair disorders have been made in recent years
Psychological Impact
- Studies show that hair loss can lead to lowered self-esteem and sense of attractiveness.
Also, it is linked to poor body image and believing that one looks older.
- Most men feel that hair loss is a moderately stressful condition
- Studies indicate that women have a more negative body image
than men and are less capable of accepting hair loss
Focus of Future Research
- On the causes of baldness
- On genetic therapy to stop hair loss before it starts
